Sunlight is best understood as a timing signal for the body, not just a way to make vitamin D. Morning outdoor light can help anchor circadian rhythm, alertness, and later sleep timing, while evening dimness protects that rhythm. Use light deliberately, but respect skin, eye, medication, and heat-risk constraints.

    Go outdoors and face toward the sun (don't stare directly at the sun disk). If the sun isn't up yet, turn on bright indoor lights until you can get outside.

Why does morning sunlight matter?

Morning outdoor light gives the brain a strong time-of-day signal through the eyes. That can help set circadian rhythm, support daytime alertness, and make nighttime sleepiness more predictable. The point is not staring at the sun; it is getting bright outdoor light safely early in the day.

Can you get the same effect through a window?

Window light is usually weaker and filters parts of outdoor light, so it is not the same signal as being outside. If outdoor access is impossible, bright indoor light can still be useful, but outdoor morning light is the stronger default when safe and practical.

How much sunlight is enough?

Enough depends on season, latitude, cloud cover, skin, schedule, and safety. A practical starting point is a short morning outdoor exposure, longer on cloudy days, without looking directly at the sun. More is not automatically better, especially when UV or heat risk is high.

Who should be careful with sunlight protocols?
