Water alone is only part of hydration — sodium, potassium, and magnesium support fluid balance, nerves, and performance.

Most people should use thirst, urine color, sweat, climate, and exercise duration as feedback. Electrolytes can help when sweat losses are high, but overhydrating with plain water can also create problems.

    Don't overhydrate — hyponatremia is real and dangerous

    Awareness during long events and hot weather

    Drinking too much plain water dilutes blood sodium (hyponatremia), which can cause nausea, headaches, confusion, and in extreme cases, death. Marathon runners and endurance athletes are especially at risk. Drink to thirst during long events and include electrolytes.

How much water should you drink each day?

There is no single perfect number. Needs vary with body size, diet, sweating, temperature, altitude, medications, and health conditions. A practical approach is to drink regularly, respond to thirst, and watch for obvious signs like very dark urine, dizziness, or headache during heat or exertion.

When do electrolytes matter?

Electrolytes matter most when sweat losses are high: long workouts, hot weather, sauna use, endurance events, low-carb transitions, or repeated heavy sweating. For ordinary low-sweat days, food plus water is often enough. Sodium needs are highly individual and should not be treated as a universal megadose target.

Can you drink too much water?
